CDS Assures Personnel of Improved Welfare and Encourages Continuous Training for Capacity Development
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has assured personnel of the government's commitment to improved welfare, including enhancements in salaries, allowances, and operational support.
He made this statement during his inaugural visit to the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) in Oshodi on May 13, 2024, where he emphasized the center's significance in preparing troops for retirement and expressed gratitude for their service.
Musa emphasized the importance of equipping retiring personnel with skills for civilian life, acknowledging the transition from military to civilian roles. He highlighted the center's role in providing opportunities for learning new skills and preparing for the future beyond military service.
"We realize that before joining the military, we were civilians. If you're lucky, you serve for 35 years in the system. We prepare them for the future because on retirement, it's a different ball game entirely, and that's why we want them to be happy, happier than when they were in service," he remarked.
"This center gives them the opportunity to learn skills they are not used to. Over time, they've been trained in shooting and other military tasks. Now, they have to think of the future, and this is what this center presents to them: the ability to prepare for the future," he added.
While addressing soldiers and officers, General Musa commended their dedication and sacrifice in safeguarding the nation.
"I want all of you to hold your heads very high, be proud of who you are as members of the armed forces of Nigeria. Whether they like it or not, we will continue to succeed, Nigeria will continue to survive, and no evil shall befall any of us. Is that clear? We must continue to do the right thing, we must avoid anything that puts our name in disrepute, anything illegal. I promise you, as long as I remain the Chief of Defence Staff of the armed forces of Nigeria, I will safeguard the welfare, training, and well-being of our personnel," he assured.
He emphasized the importance of personal development, training, and professionalism among the armed forces. He encouraged individual initiative in physical fitness and readiness for promotion based on merit.
Regarding the welfare of troops deployed in various theaters, General Musa assured rotation to prevent prolonged deployments and emphasized the importance of participating in operations.
He also stressed the need for mutual respect between the military and civilians, condemning illegal acts and reaffirming the military's commitment to protecting civilians' rights.
Responding to questions about restoring peace, particularly in the Okuama Community of Delta State, General Musa reiterated the military's commitment to protecting civilians and targeting criminal elements. He emphasized professionalism, respect for human rights, and accountability for any misconduct among personnel.
He acknowledged the government's support for military development and the collective efforts of commanders to address security challenges nationwide.
The Commandant of the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, Air Vice Marshal Herbert Adeniyi Amensilola, expressed gratitude to the General for finding time in his busy schedule to attend the Centre. He appreciated him for supporting the Centre since his appointment, thereby contributing positively to the growth and well-being of officers, soldiers, and trainees.
He sought further support to ensure that NAFRC continues to meet global trends and maintains its status as a first-class training institution.
